Technolink members Jim Watson and Gregg Profozich announced that CMTC, California’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Center, hosted a quarterly summit for MEP staff embedded in the Manufacturing USA Institutes. The event was held last month at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at the University of California Irvine and was sponsored by the MEP National Network. Calit2 is a Technology Demonstration Center for the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII).
The summit was attended by key personnel from the MEP National Network and personnel from the 10 MEP Centers across the country, UCI professors, UCI staff and other invited guests.
The summit provided a forum for collaboration on the transfer of Institute developed technologies to Small and Medium-Sized Manufacturers (SMMs) such as additive manufacturing, advanced robotics and SMART technologies have fundamentally changed how we think about design, fabrication and support in manufacturing. The challenge for MEP Centers is in the development approaches that engage SMMs in the adoption of these process and machine technologies that will increase productivity and competitiveness.

Technolink member Michel Schnaas, VP of Business Development and Strategy at  KVP International, shares how the company addresses growth through the use of technology.  For more than 50 years, KVP International has been the leading manufacturer of recovery pet collars (also known as the "Elizabethan Collar" or "Cone of Shame") in the USA. Up until a decade ago, the company fulfilled orders with a manual press on a built-to-order basis.
Today, KVP manufactures over 4 million collars per year in a variety of shapes and price points in its Chino, CA facilities. Such growth has only been possible through the proactive adoption of new technologies in manufacturing and data analytics that enable proper decision-making through capacity, efficiency, and profitability measures. Manufacturing at KVP has evolved from one manual press that would yield just over 150 units per hour to three automatic cutting presses that yield over 2000 units per hour.
Today, KVP's product line consists of over 3,000 SKUs in a variety of product categories. As part of KVP's operational strategy, KVP has set off on a steadfast path of automation and proactive use of analytics to make business decisions.

Technolink member Frank Quiambao was featured on Fox11's  Good Day LA on Friday Feb 2, 2018. Frank is the Director of the National Education Safety and Security Institute (NESSI) at UCLA's Fielding School of Public  Health.  He was interviewed after the recent shooting at Salvador Castro Middle School and discussed reducing violence in our nation's schools.
NESSI Description: Utilizing an all hazards, comprehensive, integrative and whole of community approach, the National Education Safety and Security Institute, NESSI, aims to maximize and increase public health through violence and harm prevention, response and recovery in all segments of the educational system, including:  preK-12, colleges and universities, vocational institutions, private schools, as well as faith based institutions.  NESSI uses a multi-disciplinary approach to preventing school violence and harm through instruction, operational response, policy and research.

Technolink member Michael T. Losquadro announces his new role as  Senior Advisor – Campus Advancement for the California State University (CSU) Office of the Chancellor.
As the Senior Advisor – Campus Advancement, Michael provides strategic counsel to the 23 campus Presidents and Vice Presidents of Advancement to assist them in building successful advancement programs.  He conducts campus capacity studies, organizational assessments and program evaluations.  He also assists the campuses in preparing for and launching fund raising campaigns, establishing philanthropic foundations, and training and orienting new foundation board members.
Michael previously served as the Associate Vice President, Development & Campaign Operations for California State University, Long Beach and the Chief Operating Officer for the CSULB 49er Foundation, as well as the Executive Director of Development at the University of California, Irvine. Michael is a proud Titan, having earned his Bachelor of Arts in Operations Management at California State University, Fullerton. Michael also serves as a Reserve Lieutenant in the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Search & Rescue Reserve Unit.

General Larry D James of the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) shares exciting news about the Cassini Spacecraft. Many of you will remember its launch in 1997 from Cape Canaveral.  On September 15, after more than 20 years of discovery and 13 years of gathering extensive data about the giant planet, Saturn,  it was time for Cassini to take its "final plunge."  Watch the video by clicking below.

Kent and Kevin Peterson of P2S Engineering reveal the first ever Net Zero Energy building at California State University, Long Beach. P2S, in partnership with ZGF Architects, MHP Structural Engineers, PSOMAS and Vantage Technology, announces The College of Continuing and Professional Education, offering 35,000 additional square feet of classrooms and a conference center, to be completed in fall 2018. A Net Zero Energy Building produces as much energy as it uses over the course of a year. The building's orientation and window placement maximize daylighting and minimize electric lighting during the day. The windows also allow for natural ventilation to the spaces and, combined with the use of ceiling fans, minimize HVAC energy costs. Water conservation strategies like smart fixtures, aerators, and storm water capture, minimize water use. These elements – along with rooftop solar panels - combine to achieve energy neutrality.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) is designed to engage and educate public and private sector partners through events and initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity, provide them with tools and resources needed to stay safe online, and increase the resiliency of the Nation in the event of a cyber incident. Ron Williams, CEO of Talon Companies, advises businesses and homeowners  to prepare for a rise in crime due to recent changes in California laws.  In May 2011, AB-109 was passed, realigning the California prison count by sentencing certain felony offenders to county jail rather than state prison and virtually eliminating parole supervision. County jails, already overcrowded, began releasing “low level offenders” in order to accommodate the misguided directive.In November 2014 as the shock waves from AB-109 were still reverberating, voters in California passed Proposition 47, a ballot measure to reclassify many drug and property felonies as misdemeanors.
The horrible result of these laws has been an unprecedented increase in crime. In Los Angeles through August 2015, violent crime increased 20% for the same period in 2014. Property crime was up 11% and shooting victims was up by 27%. In San Francisco, violent crime was up 13%, and property crime was up 22%. Crime statistics all across California rose significantly.
So, what are businesses and home owners to do in order to combat these predators that now roam our streets undeterred by threat of arrest and going to jail? Talon Shield recommends for a security risk vulnerability assessment to be completed to assess the protective measures that should be implemented to detect and deter criminals from targeting your business or home.  Once the risk assessment is completed, they also suggest install ing electronic cameras to control access and egress points for both businesses and homes. Install a robust alarm system with motion detectors and window break sensors. Also, lighting in parking lots is mandatory as well as intrusion lighting to discourage criminals from operating in the dark.

Dr. Jeffrey Reed, Director of Business Strategy and Advanced Technologies at Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), part of the energy group Sempra, shares the announcement of the installation of fiber-optic lines along all of the corporation's new and replacement gas pipelines, in a move that will help prevent pipeline damage and leaks. Believed to be one of the first gas utilities in the US to use the photonics technology, SoCalGas says these new lines will send early warning of pressure changes or vibrations that might indicate a leak or stress on the pipeline caused by construction work, changes in geology, or the impact of a broken water main.  The company, which maintains more than 100,000 miles of gas pipelines, says that it will install fiber-optics along all new and replacement pipeline segments that are wider than 12 inches in diameter and more than a mile long.
“The fiber optic cables will be installed approximately 36 inches below the ground surface and 12 inches above the pipelines,” it added. The first such installation, on a seven-mile stretch of pipeline in Bakersfield, which is around 100 miles north of Los Angeles, should take place later this year.

Boeing unveils the Echo Voyager, its latest submarine. Running on a hybrid diesel-electic rechargeable system, the Echo Voyager is capable of running on its own, unmanned, for months underwater while being able to dive to 11,000 feet. We'd like to recognize Sheriff-Coroner Sandy Hutchens and her team for all that they do for the greater community. A special congratulations is in order to Captain Jeff Hallock (pictured), of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, on receiving the 2016 PR People Award: Spokesman of the Year. Captain Hallock served as the Public Information Officer for Orange County Sheriff during a January 2016 jail escape. The quality of the relationships, built with the various news agencies, allowed him to effectively and efficiently deliver updated information on the situation. His leadership and dedication to both internal and external stakeholders is exceptional and once again congratulations on your achievement.

Congratulations to Frank Quiambao of the Safe Communities Institute, Price School of Public Policy, USC for his participation in 2017 Rose Parade as part of the 26th Cavalry, Philippine Scouts ceremonial equestrian unit. On this 75th anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, we remember Philippine Scouts, made up of elite Filipino soldiers and American officers, who were official U. S. Army units and the cornerstone of Gen. Douglas MacArthur's USAFFE. The 26th Cavalry fought key delaying actions alongside U. S. Army, Philippine Army and other Philippine Scout units as the Japanese attempted to subjugate all resistance in Luzon and capture Manila.
